Tuesdaily computer update

I've spent the morning uninstalling crapware from my computer and downloading the 100billion windows updates and decent antivirus software (Avast) and reinstalling the things I need to work. It will probably be a week before the shiny new laptop gets here, and I can't be out of commission that long.

I'm really looking forward to having a faster system...

I've been toying with the idea of running a fundraiser to defray this sudden expense, but the truth is, I saw this coming a long way off, and I try to keep enough of a buffer that such hiccups are not business-devastating. This effectively kills said buffer, and there's not much of a safety net left, but being prepared in business means budgeting for regular expenses like this. I've been squirreling away income bits a little at a time towards this, so I wouldn't have to settle for something cheap when this moment came.

I have GOT to figure out how to turn off iPad's autocorrect. I would rather look illiterate than have to re-type perfectly good words 7 times to stop it from turning Nvidia into McLeod. (Seriously!)

I haven't caught the iPad bug because it doesn't look like it would do many of the things I need to do. How are you feeling about using it as your main platform in the interim?

It's limited, but functional. Typing is not natural, but having to use it the last few days, I've become a LOT more comfortable with it, so it's likely just a matter of using it more. I'm not sure if it would ever replace a keyboard and word processor for creative writing. (a free-standing keyboard may help that, though...) For browsing and emails, it seems to do the job. For games (majong, scrabble, solitaire and the like) and in-lap convenience, I can't imagine anything better. The screen is lovely. For image editing and programming, it's a lot less useful than a computer. A good toy - I use it more than I expected to! But not a workhorse.

Thank you for that link!!

can you add words to your iPad's dictionary like you can with spell check?

So you managed to get it to allow you to reinstall?? thank heaven.

I've spent several hours today trying to figure out how to work the iPad I won. Finally discovered that some of the problem was not my stupidity, but a Known Issue and downloading the updated OS fixed a lot of it. *whee* Then downloaded the free 416 page users manual. Yeah, I'll breeze right through that one...

Drat, I don't seem to have my broken computer icon anymore. (abort, retry, explode?)

I hope the new laptop works great!
