Some reminders!

Commission-control is SO close. We are at 82% and have just under two weeks to collect less than $100! If you want to see this project happen (and I am confident you will wonder how you ever took commissions without it!), be sure to donate, or spread the word to folks who can.

EMG-Zine is collecting work for the theme of gryphons! We're also always on the lookout for tutorials and walkthroughs, which don't have to match the theme of the issue.

Do you have Arabian Nights themed linework? We're still collecting for another coloring book! Contact me for more information about submitting.

Sketch Fest is coming around again! Not this weekend, but next, at our usual Friday-Saturday, noon-noon time (Alaska zone).

In life-things, I wore my wrist brace through the night, which is gawdawful uncomfortable, but it does seem to feel better this morning. My ankle is still quite unhappy, and I've already spoken sternly with it, because I need it to behave today. I see the doctor about both issues tomorrow, and am hopeful that neither is serious.

Today's list:

  • EMG-Zine credits and anthology royalties
  • Start making EMG-Zine funding modifications, start a forum discussion http://www.ellenmilliongraphics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=3191
  • help M with transportation.
  • pack up boxes and ship
  • 2 prints and ship
  • tax stuff - call SE about paperwork and checks.
  • tax stuff - artist royalty stuff for coloring books
  • offer art supplies
  • EMG front page and FAQ - contact form works again - baby steps, and progress is good.
  • Design and webwork - HD site, logo drafting, SE updates, try to get some more work lined up.

For now - more wood for the fire, and a snack to keep me going...

Hmmm, I have been thinking of writing a short tutorial/essay/thingy on animal anatomy (probably quadruped focused) for awhile. Would something like that be appropriate for EMG-zine, or has it been done before?

And are there any tutorials on writing tutorials? :)

:P You probably asked flippantly, but why YES! I do have an article on writing articles: http://emg-zine.com/item.php?id=47&page=&access=Y

I would love to see an article on animal anatomy - we haven't had anything on that topic yet!

You could even add a paragraph or two about drawing chimeric animals like the gryphon to make it fit better into this month's issue!

I'm not on the EMG board or anything, mind you, but it seems like a natural addition given your topic and the theme they're currently collecting for.

Oh wow, as someone who does art commissions Commission Control sounds fantastic. There's so much nervousness and uncertainty on both sides of the fence when dealing with someone new. Artists wonder if they're going to get paid at the end, the buyer wonders if they pay first are they going to get the art at all... And this seems like it'll take all the worry out of that. <3

Is it going to be something that anyone would be welcome to join, or only those with 'exceptional skill'?

I figured if any had an article on writing articles, it would be you. :)

I will see what I can come up with.

That's kinda what I was thinking. Although the anatomy of gryphons is probably an article in itself. (Where do you even put that extra set of shoulder blades?)

It will be open and free to everyone, no jury! :) I'm looking forward to seeing it happen, too!

Gryphons are usually drawn as if the forelegs and wings share one set of shoulders. That would, I suspect, limit the range of motion available to each limb unless the structure of the shoulder bones was dramatically different than what we see with a shoulder devoted to only one limb.

What about choice of media? (Just because I feel obliged to be a troublemaker.)

*laughs!* Keep making trouble! It improves the system...

Choice of media is open, as far as I'm concerned. It won't really be set up for written or musical media, but all forms of visual art should work. Anything you can scan or take a photo of should fit the system.

I was thinking about this because I was writing a Gryphon article for EMG-zine. I am looking more into the history of the gryphon, + a wee "this is how you could draw one".

I don't think I wanna tackle that anatomy though, because I am not so hot at it. It would be awesome if you would, I have always wondered about that six limbed thing on any six limbed animal. <:) I am trying to remember if I have ever actually drawn a gryphon before....Writing for EMG-Zine sure makes me expand my horizon. :)

Heh, I'm not sure I could tackle it before the end of the month (about maybe halfway through the writing on my "normal" quadruped anatomy...and still gotta do all the illustrations. not sure I'll finish that by the end of the month either, but going to try). But, I would probably do gryphons similar to six-limbed dragons.

On dragon anatomy, Todd Lockwood is something of an expert. I can't find his skeletal anatomy online anywhere, but if you've got access the the DnD Draconomicon, it's on page 8. You can see his musculature at http://www.toddlockwood.com/galleries/new_art/06/musculature.shtml. I don't know if that picture makes a lot of sense, but the foreleg bones/muscles are all forward of the wing bones/muscles. This isn't exactly a perfect solution either, but one of the best I've seen.

I'll admit I've never been happy with the "shared scapula" idea. I would probably do gryphons similar to six-limbed dragons, and on dragon anatomy, Todd Lockwood is something of an expert. Thanks for the link! That's cool!

D&D has never suited the stories I want to tell or play, so I never amassed D&D reference books, but the skeleton for that dragon must be very cool!

Ooo, thanks for the link, that looks the best that I have seen as well. I'll include that as a reference. :) I am not halfway done with writing yet(trying to track down where Gryphons originated from, I always look at multiple sources), and haven't even started drawing things yet. I intend to do that this weekend. I think your article would be welcome no matter which month it is. :)
