Trim is up!!
Sep. 24th, 2011 06:53 pmTrim in the bedroom is all installed! We just need to caulk a few of the joints, and touch up both the white and the sage paint in a few places (where it got roughed up during carpet installation). Then we can move back in! Then, the final touches in the nursery, the entire bathroom, installing the dryer and the stairwell banister. But for now, I am going to be happy about getting all the trim up! Horrah! As an extra bonus treat, there are no longer 12 foot lengths of trim clogging up my living room!
After a long hot shower and some food, I sat down and wrote a flash fiction piece for the next issue of EMG-Zine (We had no fiction or poetry for Scandinavian Mythology! Alas!) and worked on a few Torn World stories - one a totally non-pressure far-future story and one a somewhat future story for the anthology. No art today. Alas! But the evening is young, and after our delicious french dip sandwiches (I baked all-white bread today, which is a rare treat; usually they are half-whole) I may sit down and do some drawing. I've got two sketches and an inked piece outstanding, plus that cover piece I want to work on.
Still not enough hours in the day!

Date: 2011-09-25 03:49 am (UTC)Still painting the room I'm meant to be moving my office into. Better be no early babies here!

Date: 2011-09-25 04:52 am (UTC)Painting is at least a nice rewarding step - I love watching a room change color. Do you have the nursery furnishings already? I've got a cradle at my sister's house, but nothing else yet.

Date: 2011-09-25 04:59 am (UTC)We've got a hand-me-down cot and change table ready to pick up from family when we've got somewhere to put them. And 5-6 garbage bags stuffed with baby clothes, blankets, cloth nappies, and all sorts of bizarre things I don't even know the function of, that I haven't properly done a stock take of yet. We're hoping to fuel this baby purely on hand-me-downs ;)
The only really urgent item we haven't dealt with yet is a capsule for the car. Hoping to hire one of them though, seems the economic and eco-friendly option. The thought of just how much STUFF babies use is a bit crazy, but I think half of it can probably be done without. I'm trying to keep things simple ;)

Date: 2011-09-25 05:09 am (UTC)The hospital here won't discharge you unless you prove you have a current carseat, do they do that there, too? (A capsule, heh! That must be an Aussie term, but I love it.) Are you planning on a hospital birth, for that matter? We may buy a carseat new - I'm not sure I want one of those that I'm not sure has been treated well, because it's a safety concern. That's probably the ONLY thing I'd insist on new. As far as I know there aren't any hiring options for them here (that is SO clever!), so it would be new or second-hand.

Date: 2011-09-25 05:29 am (UTC)Yep, going through the local public hospital. There's an excellent midwife program at the hospital 15 minutes from our place. Births are managed just by midwifes, but it's still part of the hospital so if doctors, anaesthesiologists or obstetritians are needed they're all on call. It's funny, I used to think just crazy people went with drug free birth, but the more I've learned about it from the midwifes (it's all about going back to natural births these days) the more I think I can give it a shot. I might just get some nitrous brought in for David ;)
I have Aussie geography mind, lol. I always sort of picture Alaska as being part of Canada (don't hate me!) instead of the US. What is healthcare like there?

Date: 2011-09-27 03:41 am (UTC)There are three choices for births here: home birth (I live miles and miles out of town at the end of a very steep driveway and February in Alaska is not an... er... friendly... month, so we nixed that.), a two-room birth center with midwives (nice place, but couldn't provide a doctor and were a little drive from the hospital. Also, what if both rooms are being used?!), or the hospital. That last seemed like the best choice, and they've recently remodeled it, so it's got big, private rooms, and it looks pretty nice. I get my usual doctor (actually a midwife/RN and I REALLY like her) unless something goes wrong, when I get whoever's on staff and am right there for emergency services.
I'm planning to try natural birth, but am open to an epidural if needed. (And if I can, given the old back injury.)
And there are times I don't mind being lumped with Canada over the US. :P In truth, Alaska and Yukon (The closest Canada province) have more in common with each other than their parent countries... Yukon hotels and RV parks sometimes even give Alaskans 'local' rates that they won't give other Canadians. :P
Health care here is quite good - we have a top class hospital, very modern and well-staffed, to the best of my (biased) knowledge. I did the rounds of available doctors before choosing the one I went with - it's a women's health clinic with a doctor or two and several RN/midwives. Brand new facilities, really friendly staff, and I like how competent everyone seems... they also have a lab and ultrasound setup in the same building, so it's all very convenient. I'm quite lucky: I've got really excellent insurance through Jake's work, so we won't have really horrible out of pocket costs at the end of the ordeal, even if surgery or something fancy is needed.
