Ugh, yuck, blech! Scanner-ugly, but here's some art - semi-final sketch before inking. Critique welcome! http://www.fantasticportfolios.com/salon/viewtopic.php?t=167

In addition, I got a cell phone yesterday, and I already hate it. I'm not entirely sure it will work, the support line is unhelpful, and I wanted to be able to USE it on my trip tomorrow, but activation takes 24 hours, so I won't know until TONIGHT if it will work or not, and by then it will be too late to get another if it won't. I don't know my number yet because that's part of being activated. What a hassle. And I will SO be that person glaring around for that IDIOT that's letting their phone ring and ring and annoy everyone before realizing 'oh crap, that's ME!'

I love me my technology and tablet PC and my digital toys, but phones? Not so much.

An alternative if you desperately need a phone, you can pick up a Tracphone, which is a prepaid thing. It took about 10 minutes to activate ours - we just called their number, told them the serial number on the phone and on the mem card, they did some magic, we turned the phone off and back on, and about 5 minutes after that presto, we had a cell phone number and all that. The cheapest Tracphones are like $30 or so, I think, ours was a Christmas gift so I'm not completely sure. Be sure that if you do this, to get a card of minutes to go with it. Assuming that Tracphone has coverage where you are/will be going, of course ...

That's exactly the sort of thing I THOUGHT I was getting - instant pre-paid phone, but with a co. called net10.com. They say (and advertise) that it usually takes that 5 minutes, but it CAN take up to 24 hours. Rargh.

Gosh. I don't know why it should take that long to activate. They did mine right in the store.

Yeah, I don't do prepaid, but I've never had a cellphone that took longer to be activated than in the store. Don't know that company at all.

I second the TracFone suggestion ('course, it doesn't do you much good now. sorry.). We had completely avoided cell phones, but needed one for our trip up to Fbx last year, and picked one up the day before we left - it's got surprisingly reliable service for a pre-paid deal. And it has pretty good coverage in AK.

OK, after a bit of Googling, apparently net10 is owned by TracFone... So I'm really not sure why the service is so different. Good luck. :)

What made you decide to get a cell phone?

This trip to Anchorage by myself. This trip I'm on right now, with no working cell phone...
