Dancing...

I have a dance class tonight and I am enormously nervous about it. It should be fun - the teacher is a friend who is an absolute hoot, and it's a yoga/belly-dancing fusion class thingy. But not only am I woefully, woefully out of shape, I also have really danced since I hurt my back. That's 14 years ago now. (And I don't really count the dancing I did for the production of My Fair Lady - that was all slow waltzing, even if they did spring high heels on me at the dress rehearsal. [I'd never even really walked in high heels, let alone danced in them!])

I'm afraid I won't be able to do it, that I'll realize halfway through that I'm doing dreadful things to my back and that I'm simply not capable of this kind of thing anymore.

I don't mind some pain - there ought to be some good, sweaty, hurt going on, but I'm afraid that I'll discover I can't do the work without crippling myself for a week.

That might make me cry.

Good luck to you and your back! *sends good vibes* Yoga and bellydancing can both be really good for your back, depending on what exactly you're doing, and how your back was hurt. Just be careful.

I hope it ends up being good for your back. My back problems are wildly different from yours (mine are the result of mild scoliosis and a wonky hip), but yoga has been very, very good for them, as has dancing.

One thing to always keep in mind that it shouldn't hurt. The things you do should take effort, but always short of the point of pain.

Good luck, and remember--you can't possibly be as out of shape as I am. *g*

There are probably things you won't be able to do. Other things ... well. *chuckle* Let's say I've been quite bemused on a few occasions to discover the overlap between prescribed back exercises and certain belly dance moves. And while my body is kind of a wreck, it is still capable of doing things around a bonfire that I have to remember not to aim at people I don't want to plaster themselves all over me after the music stops.

Heh. The neat thing about belly dance is you don't have to be *really* good at it to get terrific results. Sort of good is plenty. And it's good exercise too, even if you can only do it for five or ten minutes at a time.

Bellydancing and Yoga? And a bad back? That actually sounds like a marvelous combination!! (is for me!!) One thing my bellydance/henna/pilates instructor friend told me was that to achieve the overall result, small, close, tiny movements work just as well. And to strengthen your core muscles just gives so much more support and strength to your spine!!!

Go slow, be easy on yourself!
*hugs* (and a few shimmies)
