This is the part where I notice stuff you haven't read that I think you should, and tell you why.


Good Omens -- well, if I have to send you this book to get you to read it, I will. Don't make me come over... up... over... there.


The Stars My Destination is excellent--one of those rare stories where the main characters goes through an amazing transformation, and ends up someone totally different, but it makes perfect sense because you watch it happen. The language is beautifully used, and it's got some of the best descriptions of an era, and of the point that leads to a change of eras, I've ever seen. Some science fiction authors don't describe things well enough; Bester does not have this problem.


Childhood's End is short, which is part of the reason I recommend it; it's a few days even when read slowly, I'd think, but for all the shortness, it's got some amazing concepts. I ended up reading it for a high school course and suspect I didn't appreciate it enough at the time.


Hyperion, or more specifically the entire Hyperion series, is an absolute must-read of modern science fiction. It's huge, it's giangantic, the ending--the fourth book, mind you, not the second--will make you go O.o, and it's all about the importance of empathy, and the way humanity works, and time, and artificial intelligence, and sacrifice, and religion, and the signifigance of John Keats.

It usually has to be read twice, though.


Lord of Light I just read and am still proccessing. Whoa. The most inventive use of Hindu mythology I've ever seen, and my god, what that does to the concept of reincarnatation. I suspect it also requires rereading, though, since you start towards the end and then jump to the begining and the exposition is pretty much nill--you pick most of it up in text.


Nine Princes in Amber is the first book in a big series, ten books, five with Corwin, five with Merlin. There should have been more, but he died, damnit. The books are great, and it's really likely if you don't gel completely with Corwin--I didn't--you'll like Merlin, who is a lot funner in any case. Plus Zelazny's view of the universe in these is positively wonderful.


Discworld is an essential series for any fantasy fan, but, well... it gets better. The first five or six books generally aren't that hillarious. The first two, The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic amused me, but did not make me a fan. I suspect I became a fan in the second half of Mort--both of the series, and of Death. If you want to start from the begining I'd go around there.

And is Dragonflight the only Anne McCaffrey book you've read? O_O
I don't like all of them, but there are some jewels there to be found. Especially the one about Moreta. I loved that one.

Also, when you said you've read hitch hiker's guide, does it mean the whole five book trilogy? :D

Oh and Malloreon (David Eddings) was nice too.. hmm, you've now inspired me to make a list like this too. :p
Although I'm pretty sure mine will be shorter unless I list all the books in series separately XD
