Ice storm!

The trees are all dipped in glass, and a whole bunch of them have come down already - the whole forest sounds like a firing range as more fall. We were without power for 6 or 8 hours last night, and fully expect to have more outages - possibly of a day or more - as it is still raining and supposed to for another day before cooling off and snowing several inches. We have not even attempted to exit our (very long and steep) driveway, and will not until the temperature has dropped significantly - roads in the area are coated with up to an inch of ice. Schools and work are cancelled.

We're about to go out and start cutting down some of the very, very bowed over trees that are leaning towards the house and over the driveway.

ETA: Wow! Just watched two more trees come down over the driveway, right behind the truck. CRRRRRACK!

Wow! Do you at least have power/heat?

I remember the massive ice storm when I was 13 - never have I been so glad for a wood-burning stove.

Power has been off in two big intervals, but mostly is up, and we have a woodstove for heat. It's not usually our primary source of heat - we've got an oil monitor - but we've got a LOT of wood and a woodfire is lovely and cozy.

Oh, wow! What's weird is that it's not really doing that here -- the trees are icy and bent over, but not to the point of breaking and falling.

I've been off for the last two days, since I'm only working part-time right now, and I'm thinking about calling in "stuck" to work tomorrow. I think it would be possible to crawl into town on the ice-sheeted Steese, but probably not safe or wise, if the News-Miner can do without me.

Do you have a lot of birches around you? We're seeing damage almost exclusively with them, and it's particularly bad on perfectly healthy ones that happened to start with just a little bit of curve to them. The spruces and cottonwoods appear basically unaffected.

We walked up the driveway and looked at the ice-rink of a road before tromping back down and deciding to try again AFTER they've graveled. I hear the roads in town where they're getting more traffic are a little better, but we don't NEED to go in, so we aren't.
