Okay, so plans to either reformat or replace this computer are more urgent than previously realized, because InDesign, Adobe Reader and Photoshop will not open whatsoever. This rather confirms my suspicion that a major Adobe update was the cause of the hastened demise of my laptop. Adobe, you FAIL and right now, I hate you a lot.

What OS are you running? If it's windows, you can into the control panel and get that update out and hopefully your computer will run again, for a while at least. Let me know if you need help getting to that place.

It is Windows XP, yes, and help removing it would be very awesome! I did do a system restore back to pre-updating, but that didn't seem to do the trick.

Okay, this may not work, either, but: go to Control Panel and then Add or Remove Programs. Check the little box up at the top that says "Show Updates". The Adobe program should show the offending update underneath the program name with it's installation date. You should be able to uninstall that update IF Adobe has not made it a "You cannot uninstall this update" one. (which they do sometimes)

If that doesn't work, I got nothing other than uninstalling the whole program, reinstalling it, and then not allow it to make that particular update. Which can be hard to do- some programs want it all or nothing on updates.

Good luck. I hate computers some days, even though they'll have to pry the keyboard from my cold dead hands!

Ah, lovely! Except that Windows installer is disabled as part of safe mode, and safe mode is the only thing that runs now. *facepalm* Thank you for your help, though! I think I'm looking at a complete OS re-installation. Blargh.

Arrrggh. Been there, done that. More than once. What a bloody pain.

Adobe is a hateful company. Unfortunately, to do ANY sort of graphic work, you're kind of stuck with their products. Their software is not programmed to easily uninstall updates, unfortunately, and every iteration is more of a resource hog than the previous.

Ok, my rant's over. My best advice is the same as above: uninstall the Creative Suite and try a clean reinstall if you can.

Ouch. Well, I still stand by the suggestions I made in the previous reply over anything from Dell Outlet.

It's going to be tons of fun for you moving from XP to Windows 7. ;D

Tons of fun as in the 'rip my own eyeballs out' kind of fun or the actual kind of fun?

I wish I could reinstall cs right now! Alas, only safe mode will run at all now, and that won't let me un-or re-install anything....

The former, at first, but the latter once you get used to it. If you'd moved from XP to Vista the shift from Vista to 7 is less extreme, but going from XP to 7 is going to take some adjustment.

It's worth it.

I'm not a Microsoft apologist by any means, but Windows 7 is a slick piece of work. Also, if you've got any old software that won't run well under platforms newer than XP (rare, but it happens with some _old_ programs), I can point you to a really good free virtual environment, and you can use the windows xp serial on your old laptop to install xp on it. May not be an issue for you, but I know it's a sticking point for some.
