This is going to sound mean, and it is, but it worked.
Shortly after Colin started getting teeth, he decided to bite me while nursing. He held the chomp and had a mischievous gleam in his eye as well as a wicked little grin, so I knew he'd done it on purpose. I didn't try and detach him. Instead, I loudly and sharply said, "Ouch!", and scared him enough to start him crying.
I immediately comforted him, and he recovered quickly. He never bit me again, and never had a problem nursing afterwards.
It sounds very much like training a dog - firm, loud correction a few times, and hopefully smooth sailing after that. I'm not TOO worried about the nipple chomping, I'm more frazzled by the crying!
Over here they have this stuff called Teetha, which is powdered chamomile, which is a numbing agent. It works surprisingly well. If you can't find some there, let me know and I'll send you boxes of it. It also comes in a gel form over here and is a huge improvement over the more common baby teething gels because it's *flavorless*.
It seems too early for teeth, owchies for both of you! ---- Have you come across the one article,I think it was in Time magazine, where this woman was letting her kid, I think he was three years old, continue to nurse? There was a whole kerfuffle over the cover photo. All I could think was that poor little boy. You start remembering things around three, can you imagine how confused he might be later in life? Not to mention how embarrassed by that photo...
While that may be, this isn't other regions of the world. Here, unfortunately, we have a lot of weird, conflicting, and confusing messages about reproduction, and all the attendant things that go with it. True, breasts = food, but also breasts = sexuality. ---- At any rate, in the end it doesn't matter what I think of it, how long a mother breast feeds is up to that mother and child.
I shall look them up! We don't have CVS or Walgreens, but maybe Fred Meyers or Walmart has them. We tried a pickle, on other advice, but it was not appreciated.
We had decent luck with graham crackers as well, but they were VERY messy, so be warned. They also made diaper filling a bit looser, which is something else to take into consideration.
I agree with Tiffany, Hyland Teething Tablets made a huge difference in teething for me! Amelia started teething between 2 and 3 months and now at almost 6 months has 4 teeth. No biting so far, but the teething tablets let me have my happy baby back, because let me tell you she was miserable the first few days. That and the nuby silicone rubber teething rings work great, something about the feel of the rubber they really like on their gums.
I forgot to mention, bright starts make plastic rings that link together, they were Amelia's first teething rings because her mouth was too small for the actual teething rings, I found them in the baby toy section at Walmart and they should be small and light enough to handle. The teething tablets should help lots though I'm not sure where you can find them, so far here in Canada I've only found them at the health food store.
