Is it cheating to draw black cats in white/grey/silver/colors on black paper? Might get you the inky void that looks back at you while saving wear and tear on your black pens and pencils. Grey cats are not so invisible. :)

So, dryad, or something like it? I think all the other shifters you've mentioned have been animals, real or mythical.

Yes, she is a dryad! A very old and powerful one. I don't think anyone guessed until the last book came out. (Though a couple of people guessed she was a spirit of the island, which is....close.)

If she's the sort that's tied to a physical tree, and the only or most senior one on the island, spirit of the island is a pretty solid guess. :)

There are reasons I have so few photos of my cat (who is entirely black with a few white hairs.) You take a photo and she is a black void of doom, sometimes with eyes.

I love the expression, though!

And the top sketch has a wonderful sense of movement and presence.

I also had a black cat with just one or two white hairs and same: I have very few photos because it's just black lump, sometimes with eyes.
