The big local buzz is: Walmart

As in, it opens today.

Now I have mixed feeling about this, mostly negative. They pay crap, they don't allow their employees to unionize, they sell cheap crap at cheap crap prices, they put small local businesses out of business.

On the other hand, there are times when cheap crap is what you need, and the other cheap crap cartelle (Kmart) went under last year sometime.

And to be honest, I will be a devotee if they have art supplies. And clothes that fit me that don't cost $75.

I can't say I much like their business practices, but I'm an art supply junky, so we'll see how they stack up. I understand half the population of Fairbanks is over there today and they've knocked the speed limit on the expressway down to 45 mph on their block.

I hear your aversion to Walmart... I don't like how they set up their aisles, and every single one I've been in feels messy. Plus the last time I went into one I noticed the pathetic state of the fish in their pet aisle. GRR! I avoid Walmart at all costs.

It helps that the nearest one isn't very close, and I have other places to get good but inexpensive art supplies.

my aversion to walmart is based mainly on the impending doom of the construction of one in our town, threatening to sink both our kmarts (one of which i work at).

I like Wal-Mart...

They're affordable...and they have, like, everything. o.O I grew up with one right next to an HEB. There was never any real reason for us to go into town! Unless, you know, you had to work or if you wanted to actually do something interesting. >.>

I like Walmart - one can get all the yummylickious US / Britsy food there that isn't available anywhere else - Cranberries, Cranberry Juice, Oreos in different flavours, Twinings Tea ... mind you, that's the only reason I go there, really.

I don't go to Wal-Mart because they don't have anything I'd need that I can't get somewhere else. It helps that they are only in the suburbs and I live in the city, of course.
When I lived with my parents we used to go to Wal-Mart for things (I do like how they have sewing/craft stuff, as Target doesn't). The overall quality of the store seems to have gone down since then. I don't know about actual product quality, but the stores are messy with stuff piled everywhere and smashed onto racks in order to get everything out for sale. Overall it gives me an icky feeling.
I guess I'm morally against them the same way I'm morally against McDonald's.

I don't care for Wally World but living in the sticks as I do, they are a godsend. We don't even have a KMart! lol Their art supplies are basic (geared more to the crafts-side and scrapbooking craze here) but when you NEED a tube of acrylic immediately, they will do. ;-)

Oh! And...

..a word about the quality of the stores. I tell you, I've been to some Wal Marts where I wish the place would be swarmed by forensic scientists and swabbed down... and I've been to some extremely shiney-sparkly clean ones. Depends all on the management, I think. The one nearest me, predictable, is one of the grungey ones. lol
