eBay...

So, reading the discontent-ed-ness with eBay these days (not a particularly new thing in general, but the newest gripe being the store price increase...), what would folks think of a non-eBay auction service that was *only* aimed at fantasy art? Are your eBay customers, as far as you know, random eBay enthusiasts who like the fact that eBay also has bicycles and used clothing? Or are they *your* enthusiasts, and would they follow you to a site that isn't so... um... hugely corporate? Or are they fantasy art enthusiasts in general, that would appreciate a smaller, more on-topic auctionhouse?

The idea of a PA auction site had been proposed some time ago, and this is the logical extension of that.

I've got plenty on my plate, so this is not a terribly *serious* train of thought... but the idea intrigues me and I'd like to see what others thought.

I would adore something like that. Even just an -art- auction site, but less emphasis on the starving artist's abstract sofa painting crap you find on ebay all the time @_@

I've tried selling things on ebay, it never works out. An all-art auction site might be a very cool idea. But those're just my two kopeks. x]

I've never actually used eBay for my art auctions; I've always stuck with Furbid. I find that having themed auction sites for art really helps a lot because the people who are browsing items are specifically looking for those types of items - our art of Theme XYZ.

eBay has grown into such a vast black hole that things get lost unless you have an active crowd that you can point in the direction of your auctions.

I'd be interested in a fantasy related auction site. But you have to ask yourself if it's just going to be an art auction site, or if things like, "how to draw fairies" or "that dragon statue I no longer need" are acceptable there too. :) Whether it's fantasy's equivilant of Ebay or fantasy art's equivilant of Furbid, I'm interested.

If it was purely fantasy art related, it might get me off my bum to work on fantasy sculptures which I can't sell via PA or Furbid (unless I made it a furry sculpture, which I wouldn't always want to) and wouldn't want to sell via Ebay.

But am I clawing at the walls wanting this? No, I can wait. :)

I don't think I have any following yet, but I'm about to close my Ebay store because of the fees anyways. As far as making money off my art, you're the only one that has ever come through for me, so I think if you did an auction site, I'd be there with bells on. And I think it's a great idea, too!

eBay sucks. Literally.

eBay is indeed a black hole. To make an independant and specialized auction-house viable, you would need a visible/popular anchor. And front page plugs on major fantasy sites. And the occasional (flashy) link on eBay in auctions for mass market items such as dvd's).

eBay annoys me with their cookies and xenophobic sellers, but it's the only place where I can regularly find the bits of old junk I collect and at a price I can accept.
