Okay, I gotta a BIG computer problem.

I updated my Norton subscription today - that's the ONLY thing on my computer that I've changed.

Now, Photoshop won't open.

VERY BAD.

I tried a system restore to yesterday (Windows XP), but that hasn't fixed the problem.

Any ideas? ANY?

Edit: specifically, Photoshop will start to open, go through 'loading brushes, etc' and then vanish.

Incidentally, having mondo webpage/email problems right now, too. RARH. Have attempted a few re-starts, and disconnected and nothing seems to work...

Edit2: Okay, this is what finally worked - somehow my preference file had gotten corrupted: http://forums.devshed.com/archive/t-90729/Photoshop-70-not-loading-on-2000

First, check that photoshop itself is broken and not just your start menu links. In C:\Program Files\Adobe\ there should be a photoshop dir. Your actual photoshop executable should be in there. Try opening it from there and see what happens. I'm not sure what it's name will be since I only have elements on my work machine but you can find out by checking your Start Menu folder's shortcuts. I've had Norton bust shortcuts before.

Oo! Good thought, but not my problem - Photoshop will start to load, and go through that 'loading filters, loading brushes' song and dance, and then just vanish before completing the load. I'll edit my post to reflect that.

Also, is it getting to the load fonts section? Past it?

Gets through fonts and past it by a few. I have Photoshop 7.

What if you deactivate Norton?

Did you try to google "photoshop not loading norton"? I'm getting quite a few hits. You're apparently not the only one this has happened to.

Holy moly, you're right! I'm searching now. I went for Norton's help first thing, thinking that if it were a common problem, they'd list it there. Naaaaah, that would be too logical.

Thanks!

This is probably useless advice at this point, but do you have a program called "Go Back"? It's saved my ass numerous times. It saves snapshots of your hard drive several times a day and if something screws up you can just go back in time to the point before you made your changes. It's a great program.

That sounds like System Restore, and oh, BOY has that saved me a time or two. But not this time! Problem fixed, though... it was a corrupt preference file.
