'Cause I WANTED to.

Resla is my almost-Mary Sue from Kadanzer. Probably the best Pern fanfiction site ever, if you're a stickler for details and realistic world-building.

I'm a stickler!!

Mmmm world-building... :)~~~

That's probably 90% of the reason why any stories I come up with it don't get finished. I get too involved with the whos, wheres and whats of the world my characters are in that I start on those instead. It makes me wonder if I'm better suited to world and character building than I am with writing actual storylines for said characters.

Love the hair and the apron.

I know I am woefully ignorant but who is Mary-Sue?

Puffbird's link is a good example. The only addition I can make is that usually a Mary Sue is like the writer, but more-so... ie: same hair color and eye color, but more perfect features, more magical skill or talent. And generally a Mary Sue writer has everyone else swoon over them and their lives are full of drama.

Resla's mostly a Mary Sue in that she is very greatly like me, and in most other ways she's an anti-Mary Sue. (No particular powers, not prettier than me, older, and taller and less lucky) I do have an unfortunate habit of writing her very, very angsty stories...

Heh! The differences between Resla and Mary Sue are:

1) Resla ain't drop-dead beautiful, and men don't fall over themselves at first sight of her;

2) She doesn't have a fair of firelizards (yet) and she's not a goldrider;

3) She has yet to throw a punch at an intended romantic partner (nor has she kicked one in the balls -- I do NOT understand why that is such a cliche in fandom fanfic/Mercedes Lackey type books);

4) She's not the daughter of a Lord Holder or a bronzerider or a goldrider...

5) She doesn't sing beautifully;

6) Resla is capable of making mistakes (she dumped D'zan! Shame on her! ::grin::)

7) Most importantly -- everyone LOVES her (and I mean that as in -- everyone who reads the stories about her!). For most Mary Sue characters, in-story everyone loves in the author's story loves Mary Sue because she's just all that -- but the readers the story HATE her (or at least anyone who reads with their brain cells engaged)! At Kaz, we've got at least one or two characters in the Weyr who really don't like Resla -- but your readers all ADORE her!

Mary Sue

Right, I get the idea.

The gamers a www.rdinn.com refer to any character that has so many godlike powers that its mo fun for any of the other players to DnD with them as a munchkin, similar kind of idea.
