May. 31st, 2007 02:07 pmOkay, that wasn't how I planned to spend my morning.
I was planning to fill orders, finish the anthology and write an article for EMG-Zine.
Instead, I spent 6 hours in the emergency room! I did not do this because it sounded like more fun, but because Jake (lucky guy) got a kidney stone. He is now all looped out on morphine and back here at home in need of babying.
I would drink a gallon of gatorade every day not to have to go through that - it looks thoroughly unpleasant.

Date: 2007-06-01 12:10 am (UTC)I've had *four* kidney stones. They are just NEVER any fun. (One did land me in the hospital overnight.) (Don't tell him about the one that took TWENTY-ONE DAYS TO PASS.)
As I understand it, the best thing you can quaff to prevent them is: cranberry juice.
But yes, just staying REALLY HYDRATED is also good, however you do it. I'm sure it depends in part on what type you have, why you're forming them. In my case, it's definitely linked to dehydration -- I have always gotten them in mid to late summer, after (natch) a stretch of hot weather where I must have been forgetting to drink as much as I should.

Date: 2007-06-01 02:00 am (UTC)My husband went thru that, but had to get surgery to remove a stone that had a burr (point)on it a few days later! I felt so bad for him

Date: 2007-06-01 11:24 am (UTC)As mentioned before cranberry juice good, but avoid grapefruit.
I had a friend with an excess calcium problem, as well as kidney stones she had to have regular operations to remove bone spurs from her heels and elbows. She had fingernails like you wouldn't beleive, cost her a fortune to have the manicurist saw them back every week.
Hope Jake is feeling much better soon!

Date: 2007-06-01 11:51 am (UTC)Jake for having to go trough it and you for having to share the experience.
A lot of good wishes from Italy that it goes through soon and it will remain a 'one and only' experience.
Hugs

Date: 2007-06-02 12:22 pm (UTC)It's bad news day, my family in AZ e-mailed saying that our neighbor's trailer caught on fire and though she was OK (though she got some burns) the trailer and her chicken coop were not able to be saved.
