So, I've got these home-burnt DVDs of TV shows that I've borrowed, and I've tried everything I can think of - they just won't read on my DVD player or computer. The files open automatically in windows media, but all I get is sound, no picture. They are .avi files. What am I missing? Have you got a program to watch these that you'd recommend?

Thanks you guys!! I have Lost and Torchwood goodness working!! Woo hoo!

You're probably missing a codec.

Try downloading and installing DiVX (http://www.divx.com/).

If that doesn't work, try VLC (http://www.videolan.org/).

Between those two you'll end up getting most all codecs you could need.

what [livejournal.com profile] tugrik said. it's probably just a missing codec.

I recently found I was missing the Matroska codecs, so I downloaded VLC.
