LJ Land!

I need a recommendation for a freeware photo editing program that only has to do ONE thing: resize giant digital camera photo .jpgs to web viewing size. Preferably something that will just batch edit them without many bells and whistles, that is very easy to use.

(Not for me - I have Photoshop and create actions when I need stuff done.)

I will go a-hunting, but thought to check in and see if you've had any experiences with them, good or bad.

Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/) has been popular for that sort of thing for at least a few years. It's not quite dead easy to use, but it's pretty straightforward and allows conversion to a number of formats, and I've never had any problems with file corruption or anything.

If the person has Microsoft Office, they can use the MS Picture Manager. (Open image, select edit pictures, select compress pictures under change picture size, and then select compress for web pages.)

I second the Irfanview recommendation. I used it before I got PS, and still keep it around for quick jobs that I don't want to bother opening PS up for. Never had any problems with it either.

I would be remiss in not mentioning Gimp at this point - it's free, pen source, actually does most of what photoshop does, and is scriptable in amazing ways.

I know on Linux you can use it command line, not sure on Windows/Mac.

Also, ImageMagik is worth a look - that's a set of command-line image manipulation tools, again free and open source. Several web-based galleries use it to auto-resize-on-upload, or create thumbnails for you, etc, etc.

If you're just doing batch image resizing, I have to recommend EZ Thumbnails. That's all it does, but it does it well.

I have a great batch utility tool but I have to wait until I'm on my own laptop. All you have to do is right click the image and select resize, its like the powertool for XP but with more options, so you can retain the quality of the image.

Picasa has a super easy Export function that you just set the resize and it batch exports everything you specify to whatever folder you tell it.
