Driving tries to kill Ellen, take 3.
Jan. 31st, 2011 06:20 pmI don't have an icon appropriate to this event...
Driving home today after therapy and a workout, I noticed that the lane of traffic to my right was at a dead halt up in front of me, though my lane was quite free. I also noticed that the car just ahead and to my right did not notice and was going at such a speed that there was no way that they were going to come to a safe stop, just as they slammed on their brakes. I had enough time in those few mental frames to verify that there was no one behind me that was going to rearend me, and came to a dead stop as the other driver completely lost control of their vehicle and spun into my lane - exactly where I would have been if I had not stopped. At that area of the road, I would have been shoved right into a stream of oncoming rush hour traffic.
They managed to juuuuuuust avoid the car in front of them during their rotation and end up completely perpendicular across both of our lanes. After a moment in which I thought to turn on my hazards, they managed to rodeo out over the curb they were facing, and traffic moved forward again with no casualties.
Between the fact that I am still shaking like a leaf and Jen has temporarily and unexpectedly lost her home Internet connection, the February issue of EMG-Zine may not be up until later tomorrow morning. This will be the second issue in five years that is late. I'm going to try not to feel guilty about that, and go have a giant cup of hot cocoa and sit in front of my peaceful fire for a while.
Also, BLIZZAKS ROCK. There is still ice on the roads there from the ice storm, and my Tina came to a perfect, controlled stop, without so much as a wiggle, on an absolute dime.

Date: 2011-02-01 03:25 am (UTC)I very nearly had an idiot blast through a stop sign and right into me on the drive home from work... not least, an idiot failing to account for the fact that we have 6-foot high piles of snow on just about every corner around here now, and it interferes with your ability to see around them to see if there is anyone coming... which I very much was. Fortunately I saw the lack of slowing down on their part, and hit the brakes myself as well as my horn.
UGH for close calls. :P

Date: 2011-02-01 09:49 am (UTC)I witnessed a near accident as well yesterday while driving to the hospital. The guy in front of me tried to overtake a train of cars and trucks when there really wasn't time to do so because of the oncoming traffic. There was no-one behind me, so I slowed down as soon as I saw him pull out, because I knew there was no way he'd make it. He managed to force himself back into the train, with the other drivers hitting their breaks/driving faster to make space for him, but it was a close call.

Date: 2011-02-01 08:26 pm (UTC)Re: EMG-zine -- I'll feel guilty enough for both of us, so you don't have to. :) I had really meant to be much farther ahead on posting stuff. If I had, it wouldn't have been as much of a problem.

Date: 2011-02-02 03:00 am (UTC)I would much rather have snow than freezing rain: The first step I took on the marble steps this morning and my foot decided that it wanted to take off without me. Luckily I was able to grab the (icy!) bannister, but I had terrified images flashing through my head of hitting those steps and going all the way down the two flights (though the second set is five or so feet from the first, I thought it would be like sledding..).
I thought it might be this kind of day:
"Dear sir, I write this note to you to tell you of my plight,
For at the time of writing it, I'm not a pretty sight;
My body is all black and blue, my face a deathly grey,
And I write this note to say why I am not at work today."
