Tech question!

So, I've got these home-burnt DVDs of TV shows that I've borrowed, and I've tried everything I can think of - they just won't read on my DVD player or computer. The files open automatically in windows media, but all I get is sound, no picture. They are .avi files. What am I missing? Have you got a program to watch these that you'd recommend?
