Beat Up Ellen
May. 16th, 2005 04:47 pmI feel utterly whipped.
Some of it is undoubtedly stress. Webpage is down, my printer is kaput, I have no money until the end of the month unless I want to drain my account, family members are dropping off like flies... take your pick, plenty of stress in this corner.
Some of it, too, is that I hurt. The very long walks with Jake over the weekend were much needed, but I'm not at all in the shape I should be, so my legs and back are whining about over-use and threatening to form a union and boycott me.
Some of it is the overwhelming list of things to do, with deadlines marching up on me like an army of ants.
Some of it is that I haven't eaten much today - appetite is the first to go for me. That would be nifty if I were in need of losing weight, but since I work in the opposite way, that's not real good.
Some of it is art slump. Everything I draw sucks twinkies, and won't fix up the way I want. Digital coloring not only alludes me, it MOCKS me. I hates it. The stuff I do want to work on, I don't have time for, because of the above hoard of deadlines.
In less whiny news:
You guys are awesome, and many, many thanks for your condolences and shared wisdom - this particular post is much more just a whinefest, and I know it.
Hey, here's a herculean task for my friendslist - recommend me a movie! I hate picking out movies at the rental store because it's so bloody hard to tell if it will be good from the cover. Next time, I want to take a list. I don't see a lot of movies, so feel free to suggest 'the obvious...' I just watched Edwards Scissorshands for the first time last weekend! (delightful! Quirky! I really loved it!) I love sci fi, comedy, fantasy, surrealistic, suspense, mystery, romance... strong characters are a huge plus, gorgeous visuals, etc. I haven't seen many current/recent movies, tho I love M. Night Shamalwhosits movies and have probably seen all of those.
Got some stuff crossed off my list, horrah. Still mighty bummed about yon printer failure. What awful timing!

Date: 2005-05-17 02:23 am (UTC)I found Shaolin Soccer hilarious, crossing kung fu with soccer.
O Brother, Where art Thou and The Ladykillers (the 2004 one, not the original from the 50s) are both quirky and amusing.
Best in Show and depending on your age A Mighty Wind. The former amused everyone I know, the latter was sort of amusing to me, but had my parents and their friends in stitches.
Jumping back a lot of years, City of Lost Children (surreal SF), Tanpopo (japanese comedy), Ice Age (animated comedy) and The Abyss (SF/mild horror, only rent if if you can get the director's cut as the theatrical cut makes much less sense) are all some of my favorites.

Date: 2005-05-17 02:25 am (UTC)1) The Third Man. Classic suspense thriller. Features the famous opening music with the zither, which, you know, is a recomendation in and of itself. Also, anything "Pinky and the Brain" parodied must be good, right? Right. Love this film. Very cool.
2) La Dolce Vita. OK, so, not so long ago, I was running through the cable channels late at night and came across this film and remembered how much I absolutely love it. The witty banter, the outrageous characters- it's the ultimate "rich behaving badly" movie, and really, one of my favorite films ever.
3) Fiddler on the Roof. I just saw a friend appear in her high-school production of this and it was so cute! I forgot how much I loved the story and the music, so I went out and rented the movie right after and fell in love with it all over again. f anything, the trials and tribulations of Reb Tevya will make even Ellen's trouble's seem miniscule. Plus, I always cry at least twice.
Unconventional recs, yeah. Sorry, I'm not in a conventional mood lately. Although, if you haven't seen "Run, Lola, Run" yet (I only saw it last night), that's a good one, too.
::hugs:: feel better

Date: 2005-05-17 02:57 am (UTC)Chocolat- With Johnny Depp, of course. Beautiful man, movie good too!
Pirates of the Caribbean-JD again as a swashbuckling sexy rakish pirate, AWESOME movie
Last of the Mohicans-the gorgeous Daniel Day Lewis back in Indian times, very romantic and a real emotional tearjerker-loved it!
Bridget Jones Diary-there's one about a year or 2 old and a brand new one. Both pee-your-pants funny and both feature Renee Zelwegger(sp) and the divine Hugh Grant(love his accent!)
National Treasure-A search for the lost national treasure using various clues and riddles.Has Nick Cage-another oh-so-sexy-man-with-a-voice!
Interview with a Vampire-inspired by the Anne Rice novels. Very cool movie with the droolworthy Tom Cruise as the Vampire Lestat and the equally droolworthy Brad Pitt as Louis. Also see Queen of the Damned-also of the Anne Rice series
All of the Blade movies-starring Wesley Snipes, kicking ass and taking names, baby!
OK, enough for now....if ya need more tips-let me know.Especially if you like your movies packed with divine men!

Date: 2005-05-17 03:08 am (UTC)Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind- from the mind of the man that brought us 'Being John Malcovich' one of the most touching love stories ever filmed- with a wonderful twist.
Lost in Translation- Sofia Coppola's second movie... just wonderful. With Bill Murray and Scarlett Johanssen.
Abre Los Ojos (EV. Open your eyes)- brilliant spanish film. Creepy, sureal and touching.
My Life Without Me- Moving Canadian film starring Sarah Polly, about embracing life.
Tell me if you want more... I can go on and on forever...

Date: 2005-05-17 03:11 am (UTC)"Dead Again" -- an odd and often quite funny thriller from the early 90s starring Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson, doing something non-Shakespearean for once.
"A Knight's Tale" -- I thought this movie would be uniformly awful when it came out (supposedly set in the 15th century, the trailer featured a sequence in which everybody at a feast in the castle dances to David Bowie's "Golden Years" -- no, seriously, that is the music *they* are hearing too, not just the audience), so I snubbed it at the theatre. But later in a silly mood a friend and I rented it, and... it's an absolute hoot. No, really. And it has the strangest historically-accurate touches here and there.
"The Fifth Element" -- don't let the fact that it stars Bruce Willis and Chris Tucker put you off. I would call this one of the quirkiest and most original scifi movies of the mid-90s, not so much for the story itself as the way it chooses to portray its world.
"Sense & Sensibility" -- just to go for a completely difference genre, this the quiet, English, period romance. This adaptation of Jane Austen, by Emma Thompson, who stars, has quite a sly wit underneath. This film is consistently in my Top Five Favorite Movies of All Time, and often sits at #1.
"Bring it On" -- fun and fluffy movie about cheerleaders. No, seriously. It's good. And fun.
And finally...
If your local store has it (and it might), see if you can rent the "Firefly" television series. It's way worth it. (Cowboys in space, written by Joss Whedon of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"; there's only 13 episodes.)

Date: 2005-05-17 05:22 am (UTC)If you like quirky offbeat humour, Being John Malkovich is absolutely hilarious! I am yet to see Eternal Sunshine myself, or Adaptation which I think is also the same director... *starts writing own list*
Amelie (subtitled) is adorable...
hmm... everyone else has made other great suggestions so I shall stop here :)

Date: 2005-05-17 06:10 am (UTC)* Whale Rider (oh, so good! SO GOOD!)
* Spirited Away (best anime movie I've ever seen- it had two runs at the theater here)
* Snatch (pure crazy British gem thief bare knuckled boxing unintelligible Brad Pitt dog with squeaky toy movie. How can you go wrong?)
* Rigoletto (if you can find it! It won't be at Box Office or anything- it's made by Feature Films for Families)
* I Capture the Castle (very very good)
* Big Trouble in Little China (my favoritest B movie!)
* The Sting (a really good caper movie - with a very young Robert Redford!)
* The Thomas Crown Affair (with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo- quite a bit of steamy stuff, but just some really fun how-the-heck stuff, too)
* Shrek (just because ;)
* The Princess Bride (because if by some strange chance you haven't seen it, then you REALLY should)

Date: 2005-05-17 08:53 am (UTC)I feel like a cough potato now.
Date: 2005-05-17 11:26 am (UTC)"Anger Management" another comedy. Due to a mistake, a mild-mannered businessman named Dave (Adam Sandler) is ordered to enter an anger management program, where he meets an aggressive instructor (Jack Nicholson) who just might be the one guy who can make Dave lose control.
"Gross Point Blank" An action packed comedy staring John Cusack. Martin Blank is a freelance hitman who starts to develop a conscience, which causes him to muff a couple of routine assignments. On the advice of his secretary and his psychiatrist, he attends his 10th year High School reunion in Grosse Pointe, Michigan (a Detroit suburb where he's also contracted to kill someone). Hot on his tail are a couple of over-enthusiastic federal agents, another assassin who wants to kill him, and Grocer, an assassin who wants him to join an "Assassin's Union."
"Devil's Advocate" has Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino playing against each other in this drama/horror/thriller. The newest attorney at the world's most powerful law firm has never lost a case. But he's about to lose his soul when he learns his new boss is Lucifer himself.
"Scent of a Wowan" with Al Pacino playing a blind retired colone who hires a young man to keep him company for a weekend. The prep school student needing money agrees to "babysit" the blind man, but the job is not at all what he anticipated because Col. Frank Slade has a very special plan for the weekend. It involves travel, women, good food, fine wine, the tango, chauffeured limousines and a loaded forty-five. And he's bringing Charlie along for the ride.
"The forgotten" an excellent Thriller/Sci-fi/Drama/ Mystery. A grieving mother, Telly Paretta, is struggling to cope with the loss of her 9-year-old son. She is stunned when her psychiatrist and her husband tell her that she has created eight years of memories of a son she never had. But when she meets the father of one of her son's friends who is having the same experience, Telly embarks on a mission to prove her son's existence and her sanity.
"Secret Window" with Johnny Depp playing a successful writer who after the bitter separation from his wife, is plagued by a psycho who claims he plagiarized his short story and threatens murder. An excellent thriller and edge of your seat who done it with a wonderful ending.
"Fight Club" with Brad Pitt and Edward Norton is a movie about a ticking time-bomb insomniac and a slippery soap saleman who channel primal male aggression into a shocking new form of therapy. Their concept catches on, with underground "fight clubs" spreading into every town until a sensuious and mysterious woman comes between the two men and ignites an out-of-control spiral toward oblivion. This movie is mind blowing and savagely funny with insightful real life thought provoking statements made.

Galaxy Quest
Spirited Away
Lord of the Rings trilogy (if you're into long, epic fantasy; the extended editions are great for book geeks, but if you don't care either way, the theatrical versions are fine)
O Brother Where Art Thou (VERY strange, but good. Made me want to read Homer's Odyssey again.)
An Ideal Husband (sooo funny!)
The Princess Bride (for the laughs. It's just that fun.)
