Everytime I think, it can't get worse, it manages to.

I am at wits end.

My Epson 1280 WILL NOT PRINT.

My Epson 4000 will not recognize the paper sizes I tell it.

Epson help had no idea how to help me, because their pro-graphics technical service doesn't cover the 1280, and they didn't know what to do with my paper size problem, and the desktop (1280) people have no idea what to do with a 4000 driver conflict. Hey, why should I expect their drivers to cohabitate if their technical support won't talk to each other? Also, they find it laughable that I'm still running Windoze 98.

Believe me, I'd go upgrade to XP today, if I had one single red cent left in any of my accounts that wasn't earmarked for purchases. I don't know how I'm going to afford what I've already committed to... the books, dragon*con plane tickets, I haven't gotten ANY followup from INATS. No purchases through the storefront, not since I put up EMG Lite. Zero in. Thousands of dollars spilling out of my hands with no return. After the bomb of a Con I just heard back from, I'm wondering if Dragon*Con is even worth doing?

Once again, completely dead in the water, second-guessing every decision I've made this year.

I just want to sit down and cry.

...

But hey, great excuse for a new userpic, I guess...

Gosh...I don't know what to say that would be of any comfort to you, Ellen. 'Cept here's the biggest cyber-hug I can muster. And I wish my pockets were bulging enough to send you a loan, but I just emptied mine on a kid.

I feel your pain! I couldn't get my epson to recognize the size of greeting card paper I had. I have no idea if my new one will work since I haven't taken it out of the box.

I feel your grumpiness and frustration. Especially when the people who are supposed to help you turn out to be a bunch of twats who don't know anything, then make fun of you for doing the best you can with what you have.

*HUG*
I'd suggest getting a copy of XP from somewhere but since this is going to be a business expense and with the whole legalities involved, maybe not. :)

The biggest problem with upgrading to XP though is that it will likely not just be the cost of XP, it'll be more ram too. 98 has a much smaller memory signature than XP. Not that ram's hugely expensive atm, but it's still added cost.

David got Pro for his computer based on positive reviews he'd read, but I DUNNO...maybe it depends on what software you plan to run...he uses a ton of music software and runs a lot of digital-audio stuff for his music composition software. Pro has been a veritable nightmare for him, especially with driver incompatability, and he's anxious to swith to XP. You might want to get some advice relating to YOUR specific software uses before choosing...

This is not a good comparison, but I was equally frustrated years ago when my spanking new $400 drawing tablet refused to work with my computer, even after I had bothered the Wacom customer service repeatedly and blitzed the help forums and done every suggestion they'd given... the final solution was actually free.

I sat at my parents' (old, nearly obsolete) computer, and installed the tablet with no problems on the first run. (Of course after that, I had to keep working at the same computer to use the tablet.)

Is there a computer you can borrow and use with the printer to possibly side-step the problem temporarily until you upgrade your Windows?

I know it's a bad thing to suggest, but maybe see if you can snag someone else's copy of XP somehow? Until you're able to afford your own copy? My brother had his on his running system and when he swapped my OS he did it to mine too, I certainly didn't buy it.

All else fails.. use fire. Or a hammer.

*HUGS* Though I hate to say it, I guess that an upgrade would be best. Hubby upgraded this computer to XP, drove me crazy at first but now I am good with it. Morememory would probably help as well...heck a late birthday /early Chistmas present in the form of a new comuter might do you good ( but then you have to reset your favorites and get used to a new system, what a pain!).

Maybe this is what ails your computer:

Oh Lord, I can relate. We have moments of feeling it's all too much of an uphill struggle too. But you know, we WILL get there (I mean you will, and we will.) Just keep going - and when things are hard give yourself a treat and don't let things get to you.

*sighs* I wish I could say or do something that would offer you support or help, but I'm so far down I couldn't ever bring myself to even answer your FMS question... it just seemed so exhausting, and I have so little left. I can't even say that of course it'll turn out okay, because that represents a belief I no longer have even for myself, let alone the rest of the world.

All I can offer you is this: my observation that you seem to be one of the strongest, most stable, and most put-together of my assorted friends group, and I believe if it can be made to work, you'll find a way. This may not offer much comfort during the times when you feel utterly despairing or stark gibbering mad, but it's something.
