I usually only pre-order things if I'm going to buy them anyway, and it's a better deal to buy early. But that's just me. I like the tactile experience of shopping... actually going to the store, picking it up, feeling its weight and textures, flipping through pages of books, etc... so I do very little pre-ordering at all.
