I am such a social moron!

See, I'm really shy. I have no neighbors close enough to visit with regularly. I haven't worked a 'day job' in 2 1/2 years, and the most regular social interaction I usually get is at the supermarket*. And even then, I use U-Scan so I don't have to talk to checkers. It's not that I don't like people, in fact quite the opposite - I really like people! I have even been making a concentrated effort to ask for directions and not run away from conversations - maybe even start them.

It backfired! Unsuspecting victim at the geek store thought I was flirting with him and asked me out. Doh!

I think the combination of friendly and shy screams: 'I'm interested!' when it isn't supposed to. This is an awesome tactic while trying to sell geeks fantasy art - and has on two occasions garnered me love poetry from strangers, plus one limited-time stalker - but it doesn't help that whole 'trying not to be a hermit' angle I'm going for.

I do wear a ring, I do! Maybe it's not flashy enough.

I suggested to Jake that maybe I need to be more bitchy. He vetoed that plan.

*Aside from scheduled weekly gaming and TV events with people who are already used to my oddities.

Yeeeah that sounds like me, too, up to and including using automated systems to avoid people and having people think I'm flirting when I am so not. :| Do you also look like a lost kitten when you're embarrassed or confused? I do, and that makes it even worse.

Hahaha, oh gawd, I've been there. I'm not very shy, though...I'll start up a conversation if I see someone reading a book I like, or drawing, or whatever.

You don't have to be bitchy. I find it helps if you just slide in some mention of your SO ASAP, like "Oh yeah, my husband and I really enjoy that movie". Then there are some people who will STILL pursue you, and they are scary.

I get hit on all the time...when I'm not in my hometown. :P I have that shy/coquettish attitude. Not coquettish on purpose, I really AM shy and I never believe that I'm anything to look at, but I guess I come off as coy? *shrugs* Greg says after this past weekend, he's going to rent me out in Vegas. Good luck with that. I'd kill Greg first. ^.~
