Success?

"Why do people keep insisting I'm successful?" I asked Jake a few days back. I think it was following my e-Interview thingy with Time of the Faeries.

"Aren't you?" he asked me back.

"I had to get a day job," I reminded him. "EMG doesn't really make any money. How is that successful?"

He thought about it a moment or two, and finally said, "Because you've been around so long and you have a good reputation, because you move a lot of product, and because you like what you do."

I don't know if that makes 'success,' but it felt good to hear.

Let me put it to you this way.
Recently, I was asked by a korean doll company manager whether I could sponsor them to come to Canada and become our marketing manager. XD
I've had things returned "Care of Featherfall Returns Dept."

I'm sure you've had similar experiences, and many more.

... see where I'm going? M'dear, you're a ONE PERSON COMPANY! How awesome, empowering and successful is that?

Jake nailed it perfectly, IMO.

Because we all know that if anybody can do X, (where X is any weird, obscure, but possibly lucrative merchandising oddity) it's you.

I've never even workd with you Ellen, not in the slightest capacity. And yet I think of you as "good people". How that works I don't know, but I see you around on-line, seen you trading for a long time, see you saying stuff I can relate to, and there you go. :)

Dude, you went from drawing stationary in your sick-bed to managing a company that offers high-quality products by many well-known artists, as well as gives not-so-well-known artists a chance to get their stuff out there. EMG is, as far as I know, a well-known entity in the fantasy art world. AND, you've kept the company going, even WITH a dayjob - which takes amazing time management and resourcefulness. AND you find time for your own art, as well.

Money doesn't determine success. You are totally successful.

And, by the way, I LOVE my anthology. :)

Mister Jake Allen is a wise man, a very wise man indeed.

You're still doing what you want to do. That makes you a success in my books. :)

I agree with Jake. Success isn't always measured in dollars...

I totally sympathize with this attitude, Ellen. :) My songwriting resource (www.musesmuse.com) has been on the web since 1995 - but it's definitely a labor or love and makes little money. Certainly not enough to give me a full-time income (even if there are lots of people who are under the mistaken impression that it is). I have come to think though, that success can be measured in the amount of other lives you've touched positively over the years. And I'm quite certain you've been responsible for a lot of good things in those years since you started. Having worked with you myself, I can tell you that I found your business to be a very professional one with excellent customer service. :) So yes - I'd definitely call that "successful". Now if only we could take that to the bank, huh? ;)

Success: Doing what you love. Teaching other people by example and inspiration. Living well (which is not the same as having buckets o' money).

Seems to me that you are doing all those things.
