I am going to get to Dragon*Con in 2004. I want to go to the Highland Fest in CO and see Jennie, but... Dragon*Con!!
I downloaded the Dealer/ Exhibitor info for Dragon*Con and am studying the rules and regs. I don't think the Artists' bazaar is for me. Anyone been to said convention and have any info to give me? Is the Exhibitor's room as traveled as the Dealer's room? For $900 *&%$, I'd better be getting decent exposure along with my 10'x 10' space...
I really want to attend the Writer's Workshop, too...
Dammit, if I'm going to do this business, I'm going to *do* it. Even if I have to take out a loan. One of the publishers from Kenzer Co. told me I ought to go to this one. (I've forgotten his name and I don't know where I stuck his business card... *bangs head*) Hell, Larry Elmore told me I ought to go there...

Date: 2003-06-27 06:32 pm (UTC)Where's Dragon*Con?
For the record... Most 'cons I've been to do not advertise the artists in the artists ghetto/alley/bazaar. The artists go there, set up tables, and pimp themselves. The Art show gets a decent amount of foot traffic, as does the dealers room. The conventions I've been to... And keep in mind that's not Dragon*Con... the artists alley and the dealers room are two separate entities.
And you have spoken to Larry Elmore? I must now worship you.

I've been there. :-)
Date: 2003-06-27 07:25 pm (UTC)Yes, the con is very expensive, especially for dealers, but the average attendance is about 30,000 to 40,000 folks.
They also have ALL the major publishers, and many of the greats in art show there-- Michael Whelen, B. Hogarth, Janny Wurtz, and so on. If you have just one art panel, or are a dealer, you get in the exclusive Artist's Reception where you actually get to schmooze with these folks.
In addition to all that, DragonCon has the most awesome guest list of any con for any genre. It also has parties, signings, concerts, gaming, the bigest art show-- you name it.
Atlanta IS VERY EXPENSIVE to travel to and stay in. Reserving your room early is vital, and I do recommend getting the closest hotel, even if it is $150+ per night, for the con will keep you so busy, and especially so as a dealer. The expenses involved as a dealer may hamper making money on sales, but the exposure is definitely worth it. And, as a dealer, showing at DragonCon, GenCon, the ComiCon, or WorldCon establishes you as a "serious and respectable" dealer.
It is my favorite convention. If you can afford it, go. If nothing else, it's a lot of fun. :-)
