So, you're trapped on a desert island you've just installed a nice, shiny, clean installation of Windows XP (Tablet Edition). You've deleted all the bloatware and convinced AOL that you REALLY don't need them. What programs would you not want to live without?

I have installed:

  • Google Chrome (so far, I'm liking it!)
  • Avast Anti-virus
  • Malwarebytes

    I still need to install:

  • Windows Service Packs/10 million updates
  • Adobe CS3
  • AutoCAD LT
  • Open Office
  • Crimson Editor

    I need recommendations for:

  • A decent IM program. A program that managed to combine Facebook, Twitter, IRC, AIM and Google would be simply lovely. Have they done that, yet? Is Trillian Astra the malware disaster the user reviews at CNet's Download.com make it out to be, or are those just complaints of people who weren't smart enough to un-check boxes?
  • An FTP program. I was using SmartFTP, and was pretty happy with it. I'm tempted to use it again, but if you've got better suggestions, I'm all ears.
  • A free or cheap mahjong program.
  • A free or cheap sudoku program.
  • (Or other free, fun, challenging puzzle/mind games that do not install blinking ads, bloatware, etc.)

The scrubbed computer is working splendidly, and no files were lost. I've been debating a reformat for a while now - though it's painful to have to reinstall programs and reconfigure everything, I had a lot of junk on this computer, and it's really, super nice to have a clean slate to work with. I had a laundry list of things I wanted to do (try Chrome, switch from AVG to Avast, clean off a whole lotta programs I never used and in some cases shouldn't still have...) and it's getting done, even if it's on a rather more rigorous and stressful timeline than I would have picked.

I owe many people many things, I'll apologize in advance for further delays - I've got a full day tomorrow and a pressing client project to work on Monday, plus 10 million windows updates to do...

The computer this morning told me: "Your application has had a catastrophic error and must be reinstalled! Please contact customer service!" while working with InDesign.

I told it to shut up and behave or I'd give it to charity, and rebooting resulted in picture perfect behavior. Good computer. *pets*

It's been rather like that all day, though - lots of PARTS of things finished, and then little hiccups that make everyone panic and cause a lot of backtracking and restarting, so that the actual completed list of accomplishments? Not so good. I did get a load of laundry done, and 50 some bookmarks... not quite made. Lots of orders... not quite finished. And the first calendar is done and proofed, but the .pdf process resulted in a file size of 1 Gig (!), so I had to redo it in parts and I spent a lot of time tromping around trying to figure out a way to just flatten/rasterize everything so it wasn't such a space hog. I may or may not get it uploaded tonight, but tomorrow is really the last day I can get it to the printer and still get it for the fair.

At work this afternoon - was going to go to Shakespeare in the park this evening, but it's looking very stormy, so I think we may reschedule for tomorrow!

Things? They happen for a reason.

If I hadn't forgotten my laptop cable, I would not have booted up my old laptop to attempt to get my work done today without making a wasteful trip into town. I would not have realized that my 4000 was never installed on this one, and ended up (after a fruitless search for the disc) downloading the newest printer driver off of Epson.

SHINY. It is so much better and slicker than the old driver. Totally worth the frustrations of the day. Filling orders now!

    Also... Dogs? They are gross.

Especially when they drink all the water in the toilet and then throw it up all over the floor. EW. And it wasn't clean water, like the perfectly good, fresh water in his dogdish. EEEEWWWW.
