I have a confession to make.

I joined this book club, see, and I had to order these books (real books. Valid books. Really.), and I was browsing to see what else the seller had in stock, to combine shipping... and I ordered the entire series of the Belgariad.

The first one (Pawn of Prophecy) came all by itself in the mail and was promptly devoured. The rant about how the really IMPORTANT part of the order wasn't shipped for weeks after my order was placed and is coming media mail and I won't see any of it for months is a another topic entirely.

It is not better than I remember it being, and it is not as terrible as I expected it to be. It is comfortable. And unbelievably obvious. Did I miss the blinking signposts the first time I read it? It was too long ago - I don't remember, but wow... was it ever a mystery who poor clueless little Garion was?

Anyway, it was fluffy and fast-paced and cute and I enjoyed it enormously. I can't wait until the rest get here.

I shall say my hail marys with contrition and read something very dry and deep in penance.

I won't tell.

I love them, too.

I went back and read some Piers Anthony books I fell in love with years ago and...they were bad.

OMG, I devoured that book series many moons ago in junior high. I loved the Drasnian, "Silk".
Ah, David Eddings. It was him & Piers Anthony's Xanth series.
These days, it's R.A.Salvatore's Drizzt books that make my fingers itch.

I haven't read a book since the last Harry Potter. Sad, no?

No, it was never a mystery. Not even when I was eleven.

God damn I love those books--just reread them not too long ago. For some reason the self-consciousness of the characters as archetypes makes me happy.

Also, David Eddings wins for the greatest author self-insert EVER with his role as the Purpose of the Universe. "Okay, you've kicked his ass. Now leave him." "Can't I kill him now?" "No. You have to have a climactic battle with him later." "But--" "THAT'S HOW I WROTE IT AND THAT'S THE WAY THE PLOT IS GONNA ROLL, DAMMIT."

Hahaha, the Belgariad belong to those books that I'm slightly embarassed to have on my bookshelf. To my defense, a friend told me they were awesome and the whole series was available as paperback at the local supermarket for the amazing sum of 10 USD or something like that. Now, that ought to have been my clue, but I was young - that's my excuse. :p

But as you say, fluffy and cute and an easy read. :)

I'm sure it was incredibly obvious to you at the time, too. But you read because that's kinda the point. I think.

Good grief, the first time I read those books I loved them, but I read another one of his books recently and I couldn't stand it, I skipped a lot of the pages. I don't remember which one it was. I did like "Polgara the Sorceress" though.
