Went and saw Avatar in 3D today with some fellow geeks. Wow! Gorgeous movie. I thought they did a wretched, awful, cardboard job with the bad guys, there were some serious plot problems, and I'm not a fan of the ending, but it was a pretty, pretty movie. Oh, and unobtainium? Really? Come on, now... Thanks for taking my suspension of disbelief and shooting it. But did I mention that it was pretty? The pacing was also good, I thought - it was hard to believe 3 hours had passed when we staggered out of the theater.

And couldn't agree more with the bad guys being cardboard. SO pretty though!

After Avatar, I said to my family..."Well, we all see the lousy story. We know this was a hack job of characterization. But it's like getting over the best roller coaster you have been on, only the vinyl was ugly on the seats, sticky with the last customer, and they smelled bad. The loop to loops however...woah!...."

Yep, those problems were actually distracting at times, but sitting back an enjoying the ride is what they banked on. Now, the really fun thing, is seeing what comes next. Avatar changes EVERYTHING. There are so many outstanding stories lined up for movie making in Hollywood, that I imagine the next few years may be very fun indeed.

Yeah... Unobtanium is an excellent example of why I think it was actually a GOOD thing I saw it in German my first time. What they didn't fix in dubbing I was still able to accept better because of the German.

I like the premise of the bad guys if not their execution. "Blackwater with spaceships" sounds like a pretty scary proposition to me.

Yeah, I was delighted by the visuals and ... the story, the plot holes, the world-building, not so much. As you say, though, the technology for the filming really is fascinating. And it proves what an old teacher of mine said; that training animals for movies is a dead industry, now. Just get a computer.

The bad guys were so GI JOE, just awful. My one nitpick was with them. I also have a thing against Sigourney Weaver :P

I, too, cringed mightily at Unobtainium. However, it was pretty, and made stunning use of CGI, and had a nice relevant message to say [even though people love to rag on it, it's better than yet another crappy comedy about someone doing something base to/with someone else]. Oooh and the bio luminescence... *droooool*

lol the first time I heard it was called unobtanium I laughed and laughed. I just want to go see it for the shinies. I can handle a few hours of mindlessness for the shinies.
